Nice! The TV rating is up 0.7%!
Nationwide: 11.4%, Seoul Area: 11.0%
Jisuk appears a lot in this episode. I like it!
This episode portrays 2 women having cancer and how they handle
the dilemma and difficulty they face.
The funny part is that this time Young Mi is Kyung Woo’s blind date. Cute!
Hye Young’s mother pretends as a telephone surveyor to investigate Sang Shik.
She is cute but out-of-the-boundary, in my opinion.
She and Sang Shik make a good pair, mother-in-law and son-in-law, Ha Ha ^-^
I read Korean viewers’ opinions about the triangle relationship
among Hye Young, Sang Shik, and Jae Suk.
Most of them think that the script writer puts Hye Young and Sang Shik together.
However, many of them like Jae Suk because he is lovely!
I don’t think that Jae Suk will become Hye Young’s husband. Instead, he will always be her good friend, 32 years, 40 years, 50 years,… forever and ever….
Anyway, I like Jae Suk because he is very sophisticated, professional, friendly, and firm! ^-^
In the preview of Episode 10, Jae Suk is in trouble.
Will Hye Young be his savior again? We’ll see!

[Synopsis]
Episode 9: The Last Thing They’d Like to Leave in This World
Jae Suk: Good morning! Hi, Guardian!
Sang Shik: How are you?
Jae Suk: I, the doctor in-charge, am fine! Has our patient gone to work already? Will it rain today?
Sang Shik: Yes. It probably will rain based on the thick cloud.
Kyung Woo (talks to himself): What “Guardian”?
The ovarian cancer (Clear Cell Carcinoma) patient Eun Mi and her mother check into the medical center for cancer treatment. Hye Young is glad to see them because they haven’t seen each other for quite some time. Eun Mi has been receiving 6 chemo therapies. Chief Manager Dr. Lee comes into the room to talk to Eun Mi. He says that he will give her new chemo therapy. Eun Mi asks Kyung Woo if she could get some hormone treatment because she will have a piano concert in the near future. Eun Mi’s mother tells Hye Young that Eun Mi only has a few months to live but Eun Mi doesn’t know this fact. Eun Mi’s mother asks Hye Young to keep this secret from Eun Mi. Jae Suk comes across his old patient Jung Joo in the hallway.
Jae Suk: Oh!
Jung Joo: Doctor!
Jae Suk: Ah! Who is this? You look like a pregnant from here and there. Where is your husband? Are you alone here?
Jung Joo: I am here to get a surgery.
In Jae Suk’s office, Jung Joo, her husband, and Jae Suk chat. Jung Joo cries.
Jung Joo: Doctor, you know my condition better than anyone else, right?
Jae Suk: Yes. I know clearly.
Jung Joo: According to doctor’s instruction, I have been injecting drug into myself to get pregnant.
Jae Suk: Yes. You are such an exemplary good patient.
Jung Joo: But, why does this kind of mishap happen to me, Doctor? Why do I need to make this kind of cruel choice?
Jung Joo’s husband: Can we still keep the baby while receiving chemo therapy?
They consult with the Chief Manager Dr. Lee.
Chief Dr. Lee: You had the stomach reduction surgery 7 years ago and you have completely recovered. However, the cancer appears in other locations and spread to your ovary. You have to receive ovary removal surgery and chemo therapy.
Jung Joo: Is it possible to keep my baby while I am receiving the chemo therapy?
Chief Dr. Lee: The chemo therapy will hurt the baby.
Jae Suk: The chemo therapy dosage will affect the growth of new cells causing hair loss and baby’s growth. If you undergo chemo therapy now, the baby’s growth will stop and the possibility of the death and abnormity of your baby is high.
Jung Joo’s husband: If she receives the abortion surgery, she will recover, right?
Chief Dr. Lee: The best approach is to receive the chemo therapy right after the surgery.
Jung Joo: If I receive the surgery, I will completely recover, right?
Chief Dr. Lee: The surgery will stop the spreading of cancer cells even though you will not completely be cured.
Jung Joo’s husband: When can she check into the medical center?
Jae Suk: She could check in if there is an empty bed.
Jung Joo’s husband: Please try your best to save her!
Eun Mi’s mother-in-law comes into the patient room and asks Eun Mi why Eun Mi wants to divorce her son. Eun Mi’s mother comes in and urges an immediate divorce so that her daughter will feel better. Hye Young asks both of them to leave the room. Jung Joo checks into the room, and Eun Mi greets Jung Joo.
Jae Suk, Nurse Soo, and Young Mi are eating together in the cafeteria. An insurance advertisement is played on the TV.
Jae Suk: Why does the woman look so happy even though her husbands passed away? Husbands won’t buy insurances after they watched this commercial film because they are scared.
Young Mi: It’s better than leaving his wife to suffer after he passed away.
Jae Suk: I can’t see my wife use the insurance money she gets to live with other man happily. Can’t buy insurance!
Nurse Soo: I don’t know that you are not generous even though you look so cool!
Jae Suk: This is not a problem of generosity. This is a problem of being betrayed.
Nurse Soo: Sounds good!
Eun Mi’s mother and mother-in-law are arguing about selling the apartment of Eum Mi and her husband. Eun Mi’s mother-in-law complains that Eun Mi destroys her husband’s happy life. Eun Mi and Hye Young chat about their respective mothers. Eun Mi says that her mother still treats her like a kid. Hye Young comments that her mother gets involved in other people’s business and she can’t stand her mother. Eun Mi tells Hye Young that she and her husband is the process of getting divorced because she and her husband don’t really love each other. Eun Mi sits down to play piano in the lobby.
Jung Joo watches babies outside of the baby room which makes her touched. Upon hearing Eun Mi’s piano song, she goes in the lobby to listen to the beautiful song. Hye Young and Eun Mi’s mother chat. Eun Mi’s mother says that Eun Mi studied abroad to learn piano alone. She regrets that she didn’t ask Eun Mi not to go abroad. Eun Mi’s husband visits Eun Mi and asks Eun Mi to delay the divorce for 1 year. On the contrary, Eun Mi wants to get divorced right away and she will split half of the apartment with him. (Note: The real reason why Eun Mi’s husband doesn’t divorce is because he could get the insurance money after Eun Mi dies.)
It’s raining outside. Sang Shik has umbrella and he escort Eun Mi’s mother to a taxi first. Then he escorts Hye Young to her car. Hye Young will send Sang Shik home with her car. Jae Suk couldn’t start his car due to out of battery. He asks Hye Young if she has a spare car battery. Hye Young, Sang Shik, and Jae Suk are in Hye Young’s car.
Eun Mi’s mother calls Hye Young’s mother and chat. Eun Mi’s mother says that she saw Hye Young left the medical center with a doctor.
Kyung Woo’s match-maker arranges 2 blind dates for him. Coincidentally, Young Mi is going out to have a blind date. Since it is raining, Young Mi gives Kyung Woo her lovely umbrella with color dots. Kyung Woo is supposed to meet his blind date wearing a green check-shape style of blouse. This blind date is the 2nd daughter of a rich man.
Hye Young’s mother pretends as a telephone surveyor to investigate Sang Shik on the phone. Sang Shik gives his answers including he is 34 years old, unmarried, he is the second son, he doesn’t smoke, he drinks 3~4 times a month, he could only drink 2 bottles of beer before he gets drunk, he owned guns when he was in the USA, he is not dating a woman, and his elder brother deals with stocks. Jae Suk grabs Sang Shiks phone because he thinks that the survey is ridiculous.
Hye Young: We learn a lot of Dr. Lee within 10 minutes. You are the second son, you owned guns, and you are friendly and patient.
Sang Shik: I also know a lot about you. You go to work at 5:00am 3 days a week. You like to eat mat. Your birthday is 5/21. I saw the patient records about you. Your birthday is on the same day as my brother’s. That’s why I could remember the date.
Jae Suk (talks to Sang Shik): Do you also know what Dr. Duh doesn’t like? She doesn’t like those men with big and double eyelids eyes! She likes men who look like me!
Hye Young (talks to Jae Suk): You also have inner double eyelids!
Jae Suk: But I don’t have double eyelids.
Hye Young’s mother’s maid tells Hye Young’s mother that she has to bring her second baby son to a hospital because her baby son has had fever for 2 weeks. Hye Young’s mother thinks that this is a good opportunity to visit Sang Shik. Thus, she tells the maid that she will accompany her to the medical center.
This time, Young Mi happens to be Kyung Woo’s blind date. Young Mi is not in a good mood because she doesn’t think that Kyung Woo likes her enough so that he is still blind-dating other girls. Thus, she leaves the restaurant.
Eun Mi talks to her property manager about selling her apartment, medial insurance, and life insurance. Hye Young comes into the patient room. Eun Mi tells Hye Young that she will feel more relaxed once she gets all these things settled.
Walking toward the medical center, Jae Suk and Nurse Soo see Kyung Woo holding an umbrella.
Jae Suk: Why does he bring an umbrella?
Nure Soo: His taste of beauty is not good.
Jae Suk: That umbrella suits for my taste.
Nure Soo: Can’t stand you!
Jae Suk asks Hye Young to do the D&C (abortion) surgery on Jung Joo because he doesn’t want to do abortion surgery.
Jung Joo: Aren’t you Dr. Wang going to perform surgery on me?
Jae Suk: She performs surgery 100 times better than I do.
Jung Joo’s husband: She feels uncomfortable now. She trusts Dr. Wang very much. She had 6 times of artificial insemination but all of them failed. Every time she was about to give up, Dr. Wang gave her encouragements. We almost gave up because of her age. That’s Dr. Wang suggested us to try one more time.
Hye Young: That’s why Dr. Wang can’t to the D&C surgery on her. You should listen to Doctor’s suggestion to end your pregnancy and receive the chemo therapy right away.
Jung Joo: My ovary has to be removed by surgery. After the surgery, I couldn’t get pregnant again.
Jae Suk: There are frozen eggs and we could try again after the surgery.
Jung Joo: I have tried so many times before I could finally get pregnant. Can I have my baby born?
Hye Young: We can’t have your baby delivered now because the baby is only 20-week old. If we wait longer till 28 weeks to deliver the baby, your cancer might have spread to other parts. Then we couldn’t do chemo therapy on you. You know that you have recurring cancer. Your health is the most important to us.
Jung Joo: I understand.
Hye Young: We will give you drug every 4 hours and you will feel some contraction.
Jung Joo: Do what you want to do. No problem.
Jae Suk and Hye Young discuss Jung Joo’s condition at the rooftop. Jae Suk gives Hye Young a can of milk.
Jae Suk: I thought that it was a miracle that she got pregnant. She has hard time to get pregnant. Even though the chemo therapy is successful, it will be very difficult for her to get pregnant again.
Hye Young: We should save the mother’s life first.
Jae Suk: I am sorry!
Hye Young: Forget about it. You are a Catholic!
Hye Young couldn’t drink the milk.
Jae Suk: You haven’t had food all day long, right?
Hye Young: I haven’t had food since yesterday evening.
Jae Suk: Do you have digestion problem? Yah! You have black circle around your eyes and you look like that you are wearing a sun glasses! Let’s go!
Hye Young: I have already looked like that! Leave me alone!
Jae Suk spots Hye Young’s mother with her maid. He hears that Hye Young’s mother praising the Pediatrician in this medical center.
Jae Suk: Ma’am!
Hye Young’s mother: Jae Suk!
Jae Suk: Why are you here?
Hye Young’s mother: The baby is sick so I bring it here.
Jae Suk: Aw… to the Pediatrician? Go ahead! I will come up later to the Pediatrics Department.
Hye Young’s mother: Jae Suk, I am here to bring this baby to see a doctor. Don’t tell Hye Young that I am here.
Jae Suk: Is Dr. Lee the first son or the second son?
Hye Young’s mother: The second son! I could tell that he is the second son when I saw him.
Jae Suk: Is he handsome?
Hye Young’s mother: I learn that he did all kinds of things.
Jae Suk: Really?
Hye Young’s mother: If you are curious about it, then come to ask me.
Jae Suk: Ma’am, have you also investigated me before? Aren’t you curious about me?
Hye Young’s mother (talks to the maid): Let’s go.
Jae Suk: Ma’am, Don’t let Hye Young see you here.
Hye Young’s mother: Has something happened to her lately?
Hye Young looks at the sonogram picture of her baby and she feels bothersome.
Yoon Suh Jin and Hye Young come across each other in the hallway. Jae Suk watches them not far away. Suh Jin asks Hye Young to take good care of herself.
After Jae Suk heard the conversation between Hye Young and Suh Jin, he wonders if Suh Jin is Hye Young’s baby’s father. Even though he is confused about who is Hye Young’s baby’s real father, he decides to talk to Hye Young at the rooftop.
Jae Suk: Why did you lie? Dr. Lee should know the fact because he worries about you.
Hye Young: It won’t be a lie a few days later. Why bother? How did you know?
Jae Suk: I have known you not just one or two days. I knew as soon as you come out of the sonogram room. Ask me if you nee any help from me such as change on-duty days, have a discussion, or if you need someone to be the baby’s father. I could help you to hide the fact from your mother. I have always been your assistant. Now it’s time for me to return favors to you since you have been taking care of me. You indeed grow up. Now you even get pregnant.
Hye Young: Are you making fun of me?
Jae Suk pats Hye Young’s shoulder and walks away.
Sang Shik checks on Hye Young’s mother’s maid’s baby. He is suspicious that the baby has Kawasaki disease and therefore he asks the mother to bring the baby to have some tests done. When Sang Shik and Hye Young’s mother are waiting for the maid to finish the tests, Hye Young sees them. Hye Young misunderstands that her mother is here to talk to Sang Shik about her. The maid comes back and says that the baby indeed has the Kawasaki disease. Hye Young’s mother brags that she saves a baby’s life and in the meantime she appreciates Sang Shik.
Jung Joo decides not to have the chemo therapy because she wants to keep the baby. She thinks that she probably could only live for 5 more years even she undergoes chemo therapy. She prefers to keep the baby instead of receiving the chemo therapy which will affect the growth of the fetus. As long as her baby has her good husband to take care of, she would give up her life in order to keep the baby. Her husband is panic when he hears Jung Joo’s changing of mind to keep the baby. He runs out of the room to get Jae Suk. In the meantime, Eun Mi tells Jung Joo that she thinks Jung Joo trusts her husband very much. Jae Suk comes into the room.
Jae Suk: Why do you look relaxed when your husband worries so much about you?
Jung Joo: Because I change my mind. My face looks bright because I feel peaceful now. Why do you look at each other? Doctor, could we chat a little bit?
Jae Suk: Sounds like you have a long story. Let me get a seat.
Jung Joo: That’s why I am the leader of Dr. Wang’s fan club.
Jae Suk: Are you the only one member of my fan club?
Jung Joo, her husband, and Jae Suk are chatting the joy of raising a kid. Jung Joo is happy that her husband really enjoys taking good care of her future baby which makes her not worry about the baby. Hye Young is not happy that Jung Joo decides to keep the baby which means that Jung Joo gives her life up.
Jung Joo: Now it’s time for me to eat more so that my baby could grow. What if the chemo therapy is not going well to affect the growth of my baby? Therefore, I don’t want to receive any chemo therapy. I don’t want to do it anymore. I felt very gloomy and depressed when I decided to receive the chemo therapy. Now, I feel very peaceful after I decide not to receive the chemo therapy. I feel blissful.
Hye Young: Mrs. Lee Jung Joo!
Jae Suk: Stop it!
Hye Young (talks to Jae Suk): If you can’t explain. Let me do it. (talks to Jung Joo) Do you feel peaceful now? Do you know why some people keep drinking even though they feel painful? That’s because they forget about the pain while they are drinking. But they have hangover the next day. Now, you feel blissful for a few months, but what about after a few months? Even though you have your baby born, could you watch your child’s first step and hear your child calling you ‘mother’ for the first time? Do you feel peaceful? Is there anyone to listen to your child’s first word of “Mom”? Your child won’t be able to have a mother to attend the graduation ceremony and the wedding!
Jung Joo: I understand …. I understand..
Hye Young: Do you still feel blissful?
Jung Joo: To my baby, my baby still has a father. My baby still has a loving and perfect father even my baby doesn’t have me around.
Hye Young (talks to Jung Joo): May I leave now? I don’t think that we will meet again.
Jae Suk (talks to Jung Joo): Please wait a minute.
Jae Suk and Hye Young talk about Jung Joo’s choice at the rooftop.
Hye Young: What are you doing anyway? Why don’t you stop her but instead encourage her? Are you a doctor?
Jae Suk: I have known Lee Jung Joo since I was an intern doctor. I witnessed how she endured pain while receiving chemo therapy. I remember how she was so happy because she didn’t have recurred cancer during the past 5 years. I remember that she cried happily when she knew that she was pregnant after she had tried for so many times. If I say that I understand her choice, am I a bad person?
Hye Young: Yes. I couldn’t understand! If she doesn’t change her mind, I won’t perform surgery on her!
Jae Suk: ~ sigh! ~
At night, Jung Joo and Eun Mi lie on bed and ponder. Eun Mi wishes Jung Joo a healthy baby and she decide to play a piano song for Jung Joo on the day Jung Joo checks out of the medical center. Jung Joo thanks Eun Mi because she and her baby appreciate Eun Mi’s kindness. Eun Mi says that playing piano is her last hope and she aspires to play piano. They encourage each other because they know that it takes lots of courage to deal with the dilemma and difficulty brought by cancer.
On the day Jung Joo checks out of the medical center, Eun Mi’s husband comes to check Eun Mi out of the medical center. Eun Mi tells Hye Young that she will have a final performance concert on 3/22 and she decides to delay her divorce date. Hye Young feels sad because Eun Mi still doesn’t know that she could only live for a few months. Eun Mi plays a beautiful song for Jung Joo in the lobby. Lots of doctors, nurses, patients, and visitors watch her playing the song. Eun Mi’s husband is in the audience. He talks on his cell phone and says that it will only take him 1 more year to endure his wife’s illness because he knows that Eun Mi won’t live longer than 1 year and he will get lots of insurance money. His conversation makes Hye Young really mad.
Jae Suk, Hye Young, Kyung Woo, Young Mi, and Nurse Soo eat together in a restaurant.
Kyung Woo: I think that it is unreasonable that Eun Mi doesn’t have rights to decide her life.
Young Mi: Her mother thinks that she is doing the best for Eun Mi. Her mother doesn’t want anyone to hurt Eun Mi.
Hye Young: The beneficiary of Eun Mi’s life insurance policy is Eun Mi’s husband.
Nurse Soo: Really? This explains why her husband wants to delay the divorce. If Eun Mi knows this fact, she will be shocked. She could only live for 6 more months and her husband is the beneficiary of her insurance policy.
Jae Suk: It won’t be appropriate if Hye Young, as Eun Mi’s good friend, tells Eun Mi this fact .
Young Mi: It is probably that nothing good will happened to Eun Mi even she is told the fact.
Nurse Soo: Will she feel happy if she doesn’t know the truth?
Jae Suk: I agree. It will be very difficult for her if she keeps enduring mishaps.
Hye Young: It’s hard to say if things will get worse or get better.
Young Mi: Her mother did things for her so that Eun Mi wouldn’t get hurt.
Nurse Soo: Eun Mi has been controlled by her mother all her life such as she has never fallen in love, her marriage was arranged by her mother, and she doesn’t even know that she is about to die. She has been living in a protected space. Maybe it will be a relief for her on the day she dies.
What Eun Mi and Jung Joo could leave to this world after they die? Jung Joo will leave her baby to this world after she died. Meanwhile, Eun Mi will leave the beautiful piano songs to this world after she died. Having a loving husband is very blissful for Jung Joo whereas Eun Mi suffers alone because she doesn’t have a nice husband. Anyway, they both fight cancer courageously!!
Hye Young’s mother purposely waits for Sang Shik in front of Hye Young’s apartment. Sang Shik cooks pasta for her, which makes her like Sang Shik more for his appearance and cooking capability. Hye Young’s mother goes out of Sang Shik’s apartment when she hears the sound of Hye Young’s car parking in the parking lot. She ask Hye Young to come into Sang Shik’s apartment to eat dinner.
