Episode 10: The Qualification of Being a Parent
Hye Young and Sang Shik walk back to the apartment complex. Sang Shik is so drunk that he falls asleep on Hye Young’s shoulder. At this moment, Jae Suk, Kyung Woo, and Tae Jung take Jae Suk’s car back to the apartment complex. Hye Young asks Kyung Woo and Tae Jung to carry Sang Shik back to their apartment. Hye Young asks Jae Suk not to ask anything. Kyung Woo and Tae Jung have to prepare for their medical thesis tonight.
Next morning, Sang Shik wakes up with hangovers. Kyung Woo and Tae Jung make fun of Sang Shik. They tell Sang Shik that he fell asleep in Hye Young’s arms last night. Sang Shik says that he couldn’t remember anything. Sang Shik feels so embarrassed when Kyung Woo tells him that Jae Suk also saw the scene.
Sang Shik goes to work and he feels embarrassed that he avoids bumping into Hye Young. Jae Suk comes out the men’s room where Sang Shik is hiding being seen by Hye Young. Jae Suk catches up with Hye Young and massages on her shoulder.
Jae Suk: Is your shoulder sore? Let me massage you.
Hye Young: What? You have water all over your hands!
Jae Suk: Let’s go together!
In front of the nurse counter, Kyung Woo and Tae Jung embrace each other to show the scene of Hye Young holding Sang Shik last night. Jae Suk comes.
Nurse Soo: It looks a little bit weird if this is Dr. Lee’s sleeping habit. This is a selfish sleeping behavior. Am I right, Dr. Wang?
Jae Suk: That incident happened because either because Dr. Lee’s sleeping habit is not good or he couldn’t drink too much.
Nurse Soo: Both you and Dr. Lee are competitive athletes. Have you lost your magic recently?
Kyung Woo: Dr. Wang, I guess your game is over!
Jae Suk: What game is over?
Nurse Soo: According to Dr. Suh’s personality, she won’t just be hold tight even when she is drunk. It’s very obvious! Nothing more for you to say!
Kyung Woo: Game over!
Hye Young comes in.
Jae Suk: Hye Young, I am much lighter than Dr. Lee. You don’t need to hold me. Instead, you just carry me on your back in the future! Carry me on your back!
Jae Suk puts his arms around Hye Young, and Hye Young pushes him away!
Hye Young: You are out of your mind! Let’s go to visit patients!
Tae Jung jumps onto Kyung Woo’ back while they are leaving.
Nurse Soo: So stupid! Are you studying in Academy of bad impressions? Aw! So lousy!
The high school girl Seung Min comes to the medical center to do regular checkup and to meet the couple Min Sun and her husband who plans to adopt her baby. Min Sun asks Dr. Jung to examine Seung Min thoroughly. She says that she won’t adopt the baby if Seung Min has sexual disease such as Chlamydia and Fragile X Syndrome. She asks Dr. Jung to perform a sonogram exam on Seung Min. She insists a “Down Syndrome” test although Dr. Jung tells her that it is too late to abort the baby because the baby is too old (8-months) to be aborted. Fortunately, the test result is good. Seung Min’s boyfriend comes to the medical center to meet Min Sun and her husband. Min Sun takes hair sample and urine sample of Seung Min’s boyfriend to make sure that the baby doesn’t have hereditary disease. Seung Min’s boyfriend complains that Min Sun asks too much. Min Sun takes out her and her husband’s education and property documents and tells Seung Min that they are at the top 1% of Korean elite people. That’s why they are qualified to check everything on Seung Min. Jae Suk and Kyung Woo sit drinking coffee not far away.
Jae Suk: What are they doing?
Kyung Woo: They are the couple who is going to adopt the girl’s baby.
Jae Suk: So?
Kyung Woo: Maybe they want to have a test to make sure that the boyfriend is not using illegal drugs.
Jae Suk: Who do they think they are? Why do they request to have the drug test done?
Min Sun asks Seung Min to bring her school grade report next time.
Kyung Woo: She even requests a school grade report! If that girl passes all requests, she is not a bad student!
Jae Suk: Yes.
Kyung Woo: If the girl passes all medical examination, she will be in big trouble if her baby has some defect. Medical examinations are not 100% accurate!
Jae Suk: Those medical examinations sometimes are not totally correct. Let’s go to the laboring room.
Jae Suk delivers his patient Young Joo’s baby. However, Jae Suk is surprises to see that the baby has “Down Syndrome”. Outside the delivery room, Young Joo’s husband asks what happens to the baby.
Young Joo’s husband: Is it what I am thinking about?
Jae Suk: It seems.
Young Joo’s husband: It seems?! How could you answer me like this?
Young Joo’s mother and mother-in-law come to visit Young Joo.
Young Joo’s mother: Doctor, What happened? What happened to my daughter?
Young Joo’s husband: The baby has “Down Syndrome”!!
Young Joo’s mother: What?!
Young Joo’s mother-in-law: “Down Syndrome”?!
Jae Suk: We will know if it is “Down Syndrome” after the test result comes out. However, it is possible that the baby has “Down Syndrome” based on his face features.
Young Joo’s mother-in-law faints.
Kyung Woo’s mother comes to the medical center to talk to Young Mi who was Kyung Woo’s blind date a few days ago. Kyung Woo’s mother says that she wouldn’t object to Young Mi if she knew that Kyung Woo likes Young Mi in the beginning. Kyung Woo’s mother says that she messed up Young Mi’s birth time which was given to the fortune teller. She says that Kyung Woo cancels all blind dates after he went to the blind date with Young Mi. Thus, she wants to arrange the wedding between Kyung Woo and Young Mi. Kyung Woo asks his mother to leave because he is mad at the way his mother treats Young Mi.
Hye Young and Sang Shik bump into each other in the elevator. Sang Shik apologizes for his falling on Hye Young because he was drunk. He says that he is probably too heavy for Hye Young to hold. Hye Young tells him to lose weight.
Young Joo’s husband grabs Jae Suk in the lobby and questions Jae Suk.
Young Joo’s husband: Didn’t you tell us that the test result was OK. Didn’t you tell us? Why? Didn’t you say that the test result was OK! What are your words now? What should we do now?
Hye Young rushes in to separate Young Joo’s husband from Jae Suk. The security guards come as well. Young Joo’s husband announces to people that his baby has “Down Syndrome” which surprises Hye Young and everyone. One woman comments that people shouldn’t blame the medical center for “Down Syndrome” which is caused by the abnormity of X chromosome. Young Joo’s husband complains that Dr. Wang told them that the test result was normal.
Jae Suk: I told you that the statistic shows the test result discrepancy of 4~5 babies out of 100 babies.
Young Joo’s husband: Your explanation is not enough! Why did we have so many tests done? The purpose of so many medical tests is to find out if the baby has “Down Syndrome”! Why did we have so many tests done? Do you say that the test result is not 100% accurate? How could you say that? I demand to talk to the CEO! We spend so much money to have the tests done! It’s wrong for you to give me that explanation.
Hye Young emphasizes that the medical technology can’t cover everything even though she understands the parents’ sad feelings. Young Joo’s husband wants a solution. He keeps grabbing Jae Suk for a solution.
Dr. Jung scolds Kyung Woo who was late for 1 hour to participate in delivering a baby scheduled on 6:00am. Nurse Soo complains that many resident doctors have left due to Dr. Jung’s bad temper. Kyung Woo and Young Mi bump into each other in the hallway but Kyung Woo turns around and walks away.
People call Young Joo’s husband and mother to congratulate them for their new-born baby. They don’t want anyone to come to visit Young Joo. Their friends visit them in the patient room and ask to take a look at the baby. Young Joo cries sadly. Young Joo’s husband sends guests home.
Jae Suk comes in front of Young Joo’s room and hears Young Joo’s painful crying sound. Jae Suk recalls the conversation between him and Young Joo when she visited his office during pregnancy.
Young Joo: The test result shows that my baby doesn’t have “Down Syndrome”, right?
Jae Suk: Yes. We did the “Quad Test” to find out if the pregnant woman has high risk of chromosome abnormity. If the test result is positive, we will check the amniotic fluid to confirm if the baby has “Down Syndrome”. You are not categorized in the high risk group.
Young Joo: That’s great! Then I don’t need to have my amniotic fluid tested, right?
Jae Suk: However, you are of the over 35-year-old group which has higher probability to have “Down Syndrome” babies, which has nothing to do with the Quad Test. I suggest that you have the amniotic fluid test done.
Young Joo: Don’t I belong to the low risk group after the Quad Test?
Jae Suk: The accuracy of Quad Test is 80% while the remaining 20% might be overlooked.
Young Joo: You want me to do the amniotic fluid test, right? How much is the cost?
Jae Suk: 900,000 Won (~ US$900).
Young Joo: The cost is high and the test is dangerous. The possibility of my baby getting “Down Syndrome” is not high, right?
Jae Suk: Your Quad Test shows 0.33%.
Young Joo: I don’t want to have the test done because it is dangerous to have that test done on my baby. I’d rather use the money to buy an insurance policy for my baby.
Jae Suk: I understand.
Jae Suk writes down “Reject Amniotic Fluid Test” on Young Joo’s medical record.
Nurse Soo, Jae Suk, and Hye Young chat about this case.
Nurse Soo: The baby is handicapped, but it is not Dr. Wang’s fault.
Jae Suk: I wonder if I should more firmly ask her to have the test done.
Hye Young: If you forced the test done and the test result was positive, you would feel greatly burdened. The possibility of not getting “Down Syndrome” is quite high.
Nurse Soo: There are some people refuse to have the test done because they would raise the baby no matter what happen. Those people are very courageous in our country!
Jae Suk: You are right. This is the first “Down Syndrome” case I encounter. My feeling is very complicated now.
Hye Young: Where are you going?
Jae Suk: The on-duty room.
Dr. Jung informs Min Sun that the test results of Seung Min are perfect. Min Sun is very happy. However, she is surprised to see Seung Min’s school grades are very low, #40 in her class. Min Sun is very disappointed at Seung Min’s low IQ and therefore she changes her mind of adopting Seung Min’s baby. Seung Min argues that she is smart and she will raise her grade in the next school exam. She promises that she will be #10 in her class.
Seung Min comes to ask Hye Young to help her to study well so that she could get high scores in her future exams. Seung Min says that she wants Min Sun to be her baby’s adopted mother because Min Sun has good education and career. She wants her baby to grow up in a really good family. Hye Young says that she doesn’t have time to tutor Seung Min. At this moment, Jae Suk expresses his opinions after he hears the conversation.
Jae Suk: Why don’t you have time? You could squeeze some tutoring time for her.
Jae Suk gets Kyung Woo, Tae Jung, Nurse Soo and Hye Young together and he assigns everyone some subjects to tutor Seung Min by making a tutoring schedule.
Nurse Soo: The way for Dr. Wang to relieve his stress is very special!
Tae Jung: You are right! He wrote his medical thesis the whole night because he wanted to relieve his stress.
Jae Suk: Dr.Ahn, what's your best subject in high school?
Kyung Woo: My math and science were very good except language course.
Jae Suk: How about Korean language?
Kyung Woo (points to Tae Jung): Korean language is his specialty because every generation of his family is expert on Korean language. What for?
Jae Suk: You guys have to be tutors.
Kyung Woo: Ah? How could we spend our precious weekend time to tutor her? It’s impossible!
Jae Suk (asks Nurse Soo): Didn’t you graduate from a famous school? How about be responsible for tutoring one course?
Nurse Soo: I am not that glamorous anymore. No, thank you!
Jae Suk: How about math? Then, Dr. Suh and I will be responsible for tutoring math. She and I were classmates in the science high school.
Nurse Soo: If this tutoring could lessen Dr. Wang’s stress, let’s help him to accomplish it. I am a little bit busy. Don’t come to me.
Jae Suk: This tutoring elicits my aspiration to win. Since you all claim that you are excellent, it is possible that we help her to raise her grades. The tutoring could be held here and then we could tutor at Dr. Suh’s home this afternoon. It’s OK to tutor at my home. How about asking Dr. Lee to tutor English?
Kyung Woo looks at Seung Min’s homework and finds out that Seung Min is really not good at school. He suggests Seung Min to give up the idea of raising her grade and to look for another couple to adopt her baby. Seung Min prefers Min Sun to be her baby’s adopted mother because Min Sun is rich and well-educated. Sang Shik suggests Seung Min to memorize math and science problems repetitively. He asks if Hye Young could tutor math and English this weekend. Kyung Woo and Tae Jung are so glad that they are off the hook! Jae Suk recommends Hye Young to pick math problems for Seung Min to memorize. Hye Young asks Seung Min to bring her previous exam papers so that she could pick 50 questions for Seung Min to memorize.
Young Joo’s husband files a lawsuit against Jae Suk. Jae Suk prepares all medical documents including Young Joo’s medical record for his lawyer. Even though, he could feels the pain suffered by Young Joo and her husband for the time being.
Before Jae Suk leaves for the police station, he talks to Hye Young, Sang Shik, Kyung Wo, Tae Jung, and Nurse Soo who are going to Hye Young’s apartment to tutor Seung Min.
Jae Suk: I couldn’t be at the tutoring session tonight. Dr. Lee, please be in charge of the tutoring session.
Sang Shik: OK.
Kyung Woo: How come? We are so busy too!
Nurse Soo: Looks like that he is going to meet woman tonight, based on the attire he is wearing now! Otherwise, he will have melancholia. Leave!
Sang Shik: Nurse Soo really understands me! I am leaving now. Maybe I won’t come back tonight.
Nurse Soo: You don’t need to report your whereabouts to us. Have fun! If you are not successful in your blind dating a woman, be sure to let us know!
Kyung Woo (talks to Nurse Soo): You dare to use English even though your English level is not high!
Hye Young: Where are you going?
Jae Suk: I have to go to a place and then I will come back.
Hye Young: Where are you going??
Jae Suk: Go home to tutor that girl. Don’t scold her too much! You probably don’t understand the feelings of those people who have difficulty in studying.
Hye Young: Are you going to the church?
Jae Suk: I haven’t been there for quite some time. I plan to go there. I am leaving.
Jae Suk and his lawyer meet the investigator in the police station.
The investigator: Have you done Quad Test on Young Joo?
Jae Suk: Yes. The result showed that she is in the low-risk group.
The investigator: When does a doctor usually request an amniotic fluid test?
Jae Suk: When a pregnant woman is tested in the high-risk group or when her age is older.
The investigator: Young Joo’s age is old. Why didn’t you request an amniotic fluid test on her?
Jae Suk: I did explain to her.
The investigator: Did you not request the test based on the test result?
Jae Suk: The test result didn’t show that she had chromosome abnormity.
The investigator: Was the test result inaccurate?
Jae Suk: No. The accuracy rate of Quad Test is 80%.
The investigator: If the amniotic test is done and the result is known in advance, what will happen?
Jae Suk: We will notify the parents about the result and let them make decision.
In the restaurant, Jae Suk discusses with his lawyer and he decides to settle the lawsuit outside the court.
Jae Suk: Let’s settle outside of the court.
Lawyer: Even you go to the court, you will be acquitted. The plaintiff has other symptoms.
Jae Suk: I know.
Lawyer: According to laws, only one or two kinds of aborting handicapped baby are legal even though there are over 100 medical tests to determine handicapped babies. It is illegal to abort a “Down Syndrome” baby if the test result is positive.
Jae Suk: Similarly, it is illegal to abort a baby based on its gender after the parents did the test to find out the baby’s gender.
Lawyer: Therefore, you don’t need to settle with them outside the court. The baby has to be born even it has “Down Syndrome”.
Jae Suk: You know it clearly that most of the parents choose not to have their “Down Syndrome” babies born.
Lawyer: Anyway, this is the law.
Jae Suk: Anyway, let’s settle outside of the court.
Lawyer: Even if you go to the court, you definitely will win because we have evidences. You don’t want to go to court, right?
Jae Suk: Because you and I both know that this is a “Down Syndrome” case. Please go to the parents to ask how much money they want for the settlement.
Jae Suk is a Catholic and he comes to the church to consult with the priest.
The priest: I haven’t seen you for a long time. Now, here you are.
Jae Suk: I have been very busy.
The priest: Even though you are busy, you need to come here a few times.
Jae Suk: I am too busy to commit a crime.
The priest: Dear God!
Jae Suk: I am not here to talk to a priest. I am here to look for you. I’d like to talk to you privately.
The priest: Go ahead!
Jae Suk: Someone files lawsuit against me.
The priest: The lawsuit is not an adultery case, is it?
Jae Suk: Don’t look down on me.
The priest: What happened?
Hye Young asks Seung Min why she chooses Min Sun as the adopted mother of her baby. Seung Min answers that she chooses Min Sun because Min Sun is perfect having good education and career like Hye Young. Hye Young comments that it takes more than good education and career to qualify to be good parents. Sang Shik says that parents mature while they are raising their children and they usually don’t have confidence in the beginning of raising their kids. Seung Min asks Hye Young if she will be confident in raising her baby. Hye Young says that she will be concerned about if her child will be lonely because she has to work and take care of her baby at the same time. Thus, she is not confident that she will do half as a good job as other mothers. Seung Min is surprised at Hye Young’s opinions.
At the church, the priest gives his advice to Jae Suk.
The priest: If you have a “Down Syndrome” baby, you will have it born, right?
Jae Suk: That’s my thought.
The priest: Maybe they have already forgiven you in their hearts.
Jae Suk: I could understand the parent’s feelings of panic and burdened. I could understand and that’s why I feel agonized.
The priest: This is not your personal problem. The problem of raising a “Down Syndrome” child completely falls on parents’ shoulder is a problem of our society. It’s not fair. This couple needs someone to give vent of their anger. What can you do except being beaten up by the parents.
Seung Mi leaves with her boyfriend. Sang Shik and Hye Young take a walk and Hye Young spot some cute puppies. It happens that the owner of the puppies is Sang Shik’s elder brother and sister-in-law. His elder brother is a handicap and his job is a stock broker. They have 2 kids. Hye Young receives a phone call informing her of Jae Suk being beaten by Young Joo’s husband. Hye Young immediately leaves for the medical center by taxi. Sang Shik’s elder brother urges Sang Shik to go after Hye Young. Sang Shik says that he and Hye Young is not in love yet. Sang Shik follows her to the medical center.
At the hallway of the medical center, Jae Suk is beaten up by Young Joo’s husband.
Jae Suk: How is the baby’s mother now?
Young Joo’s husband: You are not qualified to ask this question.
Young Joo’s mother: My daughter has been crying so much that she falls asleep now.
Jae Suk: I sincerely apologize.
Young Joo’s husband: This is the document your lawyer gave me. Do you think that this case will be resolved in such a manner? Do you think that I will withdraw my lawsuit against you?
Jae Suk: I have tried my best. Under that circumstance, your wife has tried her best according to my advice and she believed me. I have done my best as well. Usually, the possibility of this case is extremely low.
Young Joo’s husband: Low possibility?! It happens to me 100%. My goodness!
Jae Suk kneels down and apologizes.
Jae Suk: I feel agonized by the heavy burden you have to undertake. I feel agonized to see the baby I delivered being treated that way. I will watch the baby growing up and I will try my best to help the baby to grow up. I hope that you could use my settlement money to raise the baby. I will accept the pressure of being indicted. No matter what the result of the law suit, I sincerely apologize to you.
Young Joo and her husband leave in tears. Jae Suk keeps kneeling on the floor. Hye Young rushes to the scene and she asks Jae Suk to stand up. Hye Young talks to Jae Suk while Sang Shik arrives not far away.
Hye Young: It is not your fault.
Jae Suk: It is OK.
Hye Young: It is not your fault.
Jae Suk: Don’t comfort me.
Hye Young: No one made the mistake.
Jae Suk: I am OK. Don’t comfort me. I knew that I would be investigated at the police station and would be beaten up at the moment I decided to be an Ob & GYN doctor. This is not hard for me! I feel terrible that baby has been mistreated after it was born! I am OK …
Hye Young, being Jae Suk’s good old friend as well as an OB & GYN doctor, completely understands Jae Suk’s pain. She embraces Jae Suk and pats on his back.
Sang Shik looks at this scene and he is confused about the relationship between Hye Young and Jae Suk.
Who is qualified to be a parent in this world? Are those people with high education and good career more qualified to be parents? For those parents who don’t have courage to raise a “Down Syndrome” baby and blame their mistake on an OB&GYN doctor, are they qualified to be parents? Parenting is not easy. Parenting a baby is not like raising a puppy. Only those people who devote their full energy, caring, and love to their children are qualified to be good parents.
What's up? Dr. Lee? Hide and Seek?
Nice clothes to wipe my hands! ^-^
Hye Young Ah ... How about carrying me on your back? ^-^
