=============
I like this episode in which Jae Suk shows his concerns about
Hye Young after her patient died in another hospital.
In previous episodes, Hye Young has been taking care of Jae Suk.
This time, Jae Suk takes good care of Hye Young.
No wonder most of the Korean viewers of this drama ask the script writer to
put Jae Suk and Hye Young together. ^-^
Kyung Woo and Young Mi are lovely in this episode.
By the way, the Chinese translation of the English spoken in this episode is a little bit wrong.
Go Joo Won’s English pronunciations are OK
(but for his role Sang Shik who grew up in the USA, GJW's pronunciations are a little bit weird.)
Anyway, the American pharmaceutical company Sang Shik interviews with
asks him to give his acceptance to the job offer within 2 weeks.
Next episode, Hye Young and Sang Shik wear the same style of sports shoes and go out together.
Well, we will see how the script writer will end this drama.
Personally, I’d like to see that Jae Suk is happy
at the end of the drama regardless who Hye Young chooses. ^-^

[Synopsis]
Episode 13: A Doctor’s Promise
Kyung Woo puts more layers of glove while he is checking the HIV patient. The HIV patient’s husband is beside her but none of her family members shows up because she has HIV.
Sang Shik calls the female resident doctor in Pediatrics to get a new drug in case the baby born by the HIV patient needs it. He asks the resident doctor to call him whenever she needs it.
In the meantime, Min Soo Young is in labor and in great pain. She calls Hye Young but Hye Young urges her to go to a closer branch of Hangkook Medical center.
When Sang Shik is about to send a text message to Hye Young, his elder brother calls in. Then Sang Shik and Yoo Sun board the flight heading to SF.
Before Hye Young operates on the HIV patient, she calls the branch hospital asking about Soo Young’s condition. Hye Young tells the doctor on the phone that Soo Young has low number of platelets.
The HIV patient is worried about her baby would contract the HIV virus from her. Hye Young tells her that the possibility is only 14%. The baby is born. Hye Young tells the resident doctor that the baby shouldn’t get any milk from the HIV patient. Kyung Woo is hesitant to perform the final stage of surgery because he is concerned about being infected with the HIV virus. Hye Young tells every doctor that no one will contract the virus even they touch the blood.
Hye Young meets the HIV patient’s husband outside of the surgery room and tells him that the possibility of the baby contracting the HIV virus of lower than 30%. However, the baby is currently at NICU to be closedly watched. Young Mi sends the baby into the NICU and is told that Sang Shik takes a vacation to SF and will be back on Friday.
Hye Young calls the branch hospital and is told that Soo Young hasn’t waken up after the C-Section. Hye Young is in shock. Jae Suk sees Hye Young sadly hangs up the phone.
Jae Suk: What happened?
Hye Young: I am going to the branch hospital now. Please take care of the HIV patient for me.
Jae Suk: Who is the patient?
Hye Young: Min Soo Young. She hasn’t waken up since she had the C-Section. I have to go to see her!
Hye Young’s trembling hand accidently swipes down some medical records from the nurse counter. Jae Suk helps her to pick up those records. Jae Suk notices that Hye Young is very emotional now.
Jae Suk: Hye Young, be careful. Everything will be OK. I’ll stay here to take care of things. Don’t worry!
Hye Young: Thank you!
Nure Soo: Min Soo Young? She and Dr. Suh have special relationships. Why did she go to the branch hospital to have her baby born there? Didn’t she come here from other hospital?
Young Mi: She had labor after she visited her in-laws. She went there because Dr. Suh had to operate on an HIV patient here.
Nure Soo: People don’t know this fact would think that Dr. Suh is rushing to take care of her younger sister.
Young Mi: I hope that Dr. Suh will be my OB doctor in the future.
Nure Soo: You had better get married first.
Young Mi: Oh! Why did Dr. Lee Sang Shik go to USA?
Jae Suk: Did Dr. Lee go to USA?
Nure Soo: He is taking a vacation. He will be back a few days later. He will use up his vacation days by just taking flights to leave and come back. He and that good-figure lady have special relationships, right?
Hye Young calls the branch hospital on her way to the hospital. She is told that Soo Young is heavily bleeding and no surgery could be operated on her. Hye Young recalls that Soo Young trusted her encouraging words and got pregnant and she has always wanted Hye Young to be her doctor because she trusted Hye Young unconditionally. Unfortunately, Soo Young dies when Hye Young arrives at the hospital. Hye Young is in deep sorrow and comes back to the medical center. Jae Suk sees Hye Young walking in the hallway.
Jae Suk: How about Min Soo Young?
Hye Young shakes her head and walks away silently. Hye Young recalls her attending the funeral where Soo Young’s mother thanked her for coming to the funeral and Soo Young’s husband told Hye Young that Soo Young had been proud of having Hye Young as her doctor. Hye Young feels so sorry to Soo Young that she couldn’t keep her promise.
Jae Suk comes to Hye Young’s office and asks her to talk at the rest area.
Hye Young: I have always thought that I am an excellent doctor. I perform surgery well, I have good judgement, I have good hands, and I do sonograms well.
Jae Suk: Yes. You are good at everything, which is well recongnized.
Hye Young: But, in fact, that’s not it! I am nothing! I really didn’t know. Min Soo Young was my patient when I worked in another hospital. She was transferred to Dr. Yoon Suh Jin when I left there to come here to work. The reasons why I transferred her to Dr. Yoon were that he has more experience than me and I didn’t know if I was trying to avoid her case. That’s why I have always been doing well till now. But, actually, I am nothing! Baby died and my patient died. I couldn’t do anything! Why did I say the promise I couldn’t keep?!
Jae Suk: You have tried your best! You have tried your best to Min Soo Young.
Hye Young: Her guardian thanks me because I promised that I would be at her side any time and any place. She was so happy and so proud of me. Why did I make that kind of promise? I didn’t consider the situation of emergency and many unpredictable situations. Why did I make that kind of promise beyong my capability?
Jae Suk: If you want to cry, then cry out loud!
Hye Young: I couldn’t cry. I want to cry but I have no tears to cry.
Jae Suk: Try a little bit. You will feel better if you could cry it out. See you later.
Kyung Woo comes to the nurse counter trying to get Young Mi out to have a nice chat. They use different types of coffee name as hints of different dateing activities. This time they use “Latte” as the hint. Unfortunately, a patient’s husband brings diffenent type of coffees to treat the doctors and nurses. Jae Suk comes to the nurse counter.
Jae Suk: Please do well of your tasks assigned by Dr. Suh today. Don’t bother her with miscellaneous things.
Kyung Woo: Why?
Nurse Soo: Am I guessing it right? That patient…? Really?
Kyung Woo: What happened?
Nurse Soo: The mother or the baby?
Jae Suk: The mother.
Nurse Soo: Oh! Dr. Suh must feel so sad! That patient followed Dr. Suh to be checked up here. They seem to have special relationships.
Tae Jung: That pregnant woman… did she go to the branch hospital?
Kyung Woo: That’s better than she died under Dr. Suh’s care.
Tae Jung: Dr. Suh kept telling her to call whenever she’s in labor. Dr. Suh must regret that her patient die in other hospital.
Young Mi: Dr. Suh indeed answered the phone call, but she was operating on the HIV patient. That’s why Dr. Suh asked the patient to go to the branch hospital.
Nurse Soo: Dr. Suh must feel very down now.
Jae Suk: So, don’t cause trouble and don’t bother her. Prepare well for what you have to do and prepare well for visiting patients. I will take care of sonograms by myself.
Nurse Soo: Sigh!
Jae Suk: What?
Nurse Soo: We have a sacrificing man here! Dr. Suh has to understand your efforts! Now, Dr. Wang is going to visit patients with the resident doctors.
Jae Suk: Because Dr. Suh is not in good condition now.
Nurse Soo: Indeed. A baby died a few days ago and now a mother died. Sigh~ Let’s try out best to collaborate with Dr. Suh today.
Hye Young comes to the nurse counter. Everyone presents their individual coffee to Hye Young. Hye Young bring Kyung Woo and Tae Jung to visit patients. Hye Young seems not be able to concentrate on patients due to sadness. Hye Young visits the HIV patient and brings the husband to visit NICU to take a look at his baby. Kyung Woo is still trying to avoid touch the HIV patient. In the NICU, Hye Young explains to the father that the baby is quarantined in case of contracting germs or virus. Hye Young notices that Sang Shik is absent from work.
At the nurse counter,
Kyung Woo: I really don’t understand. Why do that couple have the 2nd child if they are so worried about HIV?
Young Mi: I heard that the first child also carries the virus.
Kyung Woo: Isn’t it more dangerous? Everyone in that family is contagious. Why do they want to have the 2nd child? I really couldn’t understand?
Jae Suk: Why does the couple need to have your understanding to have their 2nd child?
Kyung Woo: I don’t mean it. They have already had a child. If they are the carrier of HIV, then the 2nd child has high possibility of having HIV. Even the child doesn’t have HIV, he will easily contract diseases in the course of growing up. Why do they want to have the 2nd child? I really don’t understand!
Jae Suk: Dr. Ahn couldn’t understand. What if that couple has to worry after the baby was born and has to worry when their kids don’t behave? If so, do they want to give kids up?
Kyung Woo: I don’t mean that. I am just sympathetic about the child.
Jae Suk: I couldn’t understand why we have to perform infertility surgery on patients having the “Lupus” disease. That’s because people like you have this kind of thoughts.
Kyung Woo: I don’t mean it.
Jae Suk: Do you know why the HIV virus frightens people?
Kyung Woo: Because the virus damages people’s immune system.
Jae Suk: The virus doesn’t damage people’s immune system; it damages the relationships between people. It attacks people’s weakest anxiety, widens ugliness, and elicits sense of distrust and horror, which freightens people the most! Your attitude makes those people become the unforgivable people.
Kyung Woo: I am wrong. I am going to get the milk and Latte now.
Nurse Soo: Didn’t you just drink some? If you drink too much, you will gain weight.
Kyung Woo: Because I feel tired. I need sugar when I feel tired!
The husband of the HIV patient is talking on the cell phone. None of his family members would like to come to the medical center to visit his wife.
Kyung Woo and Young Mi meet privately at the ladder leading to the rooftop. Kyung Woo asks Young Mi if she could tolerate his family. Young Mi answers that she will tolerate because she loves Kyung Woo. Kyung Woo’s parents owe people money and therefore he might quit his job to open a shop. In the beginning of opening a shop, he might not earn any money. Young Mi says that she will be responsible for earning money. Kyung Woo gives Young Mi a necklace with a ring. Kyung Woo kisses Young at her cheek and leaves because he is called to see patients.
The husband of the HIV patient thanks Hye Young’s willingness to perform surgery on his wife because no other hospitals wanted to take his wife in because of HIV.
Jae Suk and Hye Young chat.
Jae Suk: Do you still feel bad?
Hye Young: Yes.
Jae Suk: Then feel the agony. I hope that you are sensitive to this kind of thing. But don’t go into a corner that you can’t get out. Just feel the agony. Do you want to eat?
Hye Young: I’d like to go home earlier today. Do you want to go home now?
Jae Suk receives a text message.
Jae Suk: You go first. I have something to do here. Don’t feel upset!
Hye Young goes to the supermarket and buys a fish. At home, she doesn’t know how to cook, so she goes to find Sang Shik to cook for her. Hye Young stands in front of Sang Shik’s apartment. Jae Suk sees Hye Young.
Jae Suk: What are you doing here?
Hye Young: I am looking for Dr. Lee. I bought a fish but I don’t know how to cook it.
Jae Suk: Don’t’ you know that Dr. Lee went to USA?
Hye Young: No.
Jae Suk: He is taking a vacation now. He will be back on Friday.
Jae Suk cooks the fish for Hye Young.
Hye Young: Do you really know how to cook?
Jae Suk: Why can’t I? If Dr. Lee could do, then I could do.
Hye Young: Yah! You and Dr. Lee’s specialties are different!
Jae Suk: Wait and see!
Jae Suk searches internet as to how to cook the fish and he is confused because there are too many ways of cooking fish. Jae Suk asks Hye Young if Dr. Lee cooks delicious fish. Hye Young answers, “Yes.” Then Jae Suk makes an international call to Sang Shik.
Sang Shik: This is Lee Sang Shik.
Jae Suk: Dr. Lee.
Sang Shik: Dr. Wang? What’s up? I remember that Dr. Suh likes plain soup.
Jae Suk: Could you tell me how to cook?
Sang Shik: Boil the water first, and then put the fish in. Before you put the fish in, put bean sprouts or other materials in. Cut the fish head and tail off but save the gall bladder. Is Dr. Suh OK?
Jae Suk: Do you like to talk to her directly? Hye Young, your phone call! Dr. Lee!
Hye Young: Forget about it! Cook quickly! I am hungry now!
Jae Suk: She is so hungry that she goes crazy now. We will chat after you come back. Thank you!
Sang Shik: Hope that you have a nice dinner. Bye!
Sang Shik tells Yoo Sun that he will go back as soon as the interview is over.
Jae Suk cooks according to Sang Shik’s instruction but he recognizes wrong part as the gall bladder so that the soup tastes bitter.
Hye Young: Did you clean up all internal organs?
Jae Suk: I did!
Hye Young: What did you do in the Anatomy class?
Jae Suk calls a restaurant to cook the fish for him.
Jae Suk and Hye Young come out of Hye Young’s apartment.
Jae Suk: I will learn well from Dr. Lee after he comes back.
Hye Young: I’d rather do it by myself because I was the best in the Anatomy class.
Jae Suk: I am afraid that you feel nausea because you are pregnant.
Hye Young: Why did Dr. Lee leave for USA? A few days are too short to take a vacation.
Jae Suk: Are you curious?
Hye Young: A little bit.
Jae Suk: A person will miss her puppy if it disappears.
Jae Suk is about to call Dr. Lee. Hye Young stops him. Jae Suk says that Dr. Lee will soon be back on Friday.
Jae Suk: Go back to your apartment.
Hye Young: I’d like to take a walk.
Jae Suk: Do you want me to accompany you?
Hye Young: Forget about it! I’d like to take a walk alone. I have something to think about.
Jae Suk: OK. No one will do bad thing to you, right? Give me a call when you are back.
Hye Young walks away. Jae Suk is concerned about Hye Young because she has been gloomy all day.
Hye Youn comes across a puppy on the street and she brings the puppy back to Sang Shik’s sister-in-law. Sang Shik’s sister-in-law chats with Hye Young in the house. She says that Sang Shik has been taking care of his elder brother since he was in elementary school. She hopes that Sang Shik will pursue his own life because Sang Shik gave up his job at University of Pensylvania before because he wanted to be with his handicapped elder brother. She asks if Hye Young has ever thought of going to USA to study or work. Hye Young answers, “No.”
Sang Shik is interviewed by a committee of the pharmaceutical company.
The interviewer: Your experience in the field at Africa is impressive. Dr. Jung has strongly recommended you as a candicate and your thesis is very much in line with our vision. Since you have so much experience and enthusiasm, we think you are highly qualified for the job.
Sang Shik: Thank you.
The interviewer: Do you have any question?
Sang Shik: I want to know if you actually will develop new medicines. Because out of 87 new medicines approved by the USFDA in 2002, only 7 of them were proved to be clinicly more effective than the products of the past. So, if this is only about developing new medicines more useful than feasible, there are a lot of people will be interested in joining this project other than myself.
The interviewer: I would say that this will be a new medicine that could be considered almost revolutionary and that’s why our government is funding this project. We are coordinating with the government or research center but the patent will be owned by our company.
Sang Shik: I am not interested in trying to find clinicly trials in the last minute which is only helping you to register your patent.
The interviewer: We promise that it will not happen. This will be a joining research project. We will provide the data and you can review it completely.
Sang Shik: OK.
The interviewer: I heard that you are staying in Korea. If you agree to work with us, will there be a problem to move to USA? How much time would you need to prepare. I would like to know if two weeks will be enough. You are not the only candidate we are considering. But if you will confirm with us within 2 weeks, we will put you on our priority list.
Sang Shik: I got it. Thank you.
Sang Shik looks for Hye Young and Jae Suk’s data on internet and thinks about that Jae Suk asked Hye Young to consider his proposal. He calls his elder brother who let him know that Hye Young has been to his elder’s house. Yoo Sun comes in and comments that this new drug research project is not only for the pharmaceutical company’s profits. Sang Shik will leave for Korea soon.
Back in the medical center, Nurse Soo notices that Kyung Woo and Young Mi wear the same kind of necklace with a ring. Both of them leave the nurse counter quickly so that they won’t be questioned by Nurse Soo.
Nurse Soo (asks Jae Suk): These two people are so strange. Do you also think so?
Jae Suk: Leave them alone.
Nurse Soo: What’s up?
Jae Suk: There is something between them.
Kyung Woo and Young Mi meet to attend the lunch where there parents discuss the wedding details for them. Kyung Woo’s mother and aunt brag that Kyung Woo’s eldest brother is a prosecutor and Kyung Woo’s second brother is a lawyer and will study abroad soon. The aunt comments that Young Mi’s family hasn’t paid much attention on education and she worries if Young Mi’s IQ is not high. Young Mi’s father says that he is satisfied as long as his children are healthy. Young Mi’s stomach aches and she says that she is probably too nervous.
The Chief Manager Dr. Lee comes to notify Hye Young that she has been recommended by the chief manager of the OB & GYN to be the professor at the headquarter of the Hankook Medical Center. Hye Young goes to the headquater to talk to the manager in charge of medical professors. Suh Jin is also invited to attend the discussion. Suh Jin urges Hye Young to accept this good opportunity. He will leave for Japan as a visiting professor within 2 months and therefore he asks Hye Young not to worry about their relationship when she consider whether to accept the job offer or not.
Young Mi feels stomach pain while she and Kyung Woo are chatting.
Kyung Woo accompanies Young Mi to have a sonogram examination. Young Mi insists on asking female nurse or Dr. Suh to examine her. A Teratuma (tumor) is found on Young Mi’s ovary during the sonogram exam. The female doctor urges to have this teratuma removed so that Young Mi’s ovary will not be damaged. Kyung Woo suggests to ask Jae Suk to use Laparoscope surgery to remove the teratuma, but Young Mi objects the idea because she doesn’t want Jae Suk to see her belly.
Kyung Woo calls Hye Young who is on her way back to the medical center. Since it takes 40 minutes for Hye Young to arrive at the center, she urges Kyung Woo to ask Jae Suk to operate on Young Mi.
Jae Suk (talks to Young Mi): I am 10 times better than Dr. Suh on performing the Laparoscope surgery! Don’t you trust me? Sigh! What’s up with you?
Young Mi: I am shy!
Jae Suk: What are you shy for? We are acquaitants.
Young Mi: I can tolerate. Let’s wait for Dr. Suh. (Young Mi answers Hye Young’s phone call) Dr. Suh!
Hye Young: What are you doing now? If you wait until I come back, your whole ovary has to be removed! Don’t you know that Dr. Wang is the best on the Laparoscope surgery?
Young Mi: I don’t want to. I have to take off all my clothes while he is operating on me, right? I don’t want to because he is a person I face at work everyday. Please come back soon, doctor!
Jae Suk (answers to Hye Young’s call): I also like to perform the surgery on her, but she doesn’t want me to do it on her! You are so good that there is such a patient waiting for you to come back! Hurry back!
Hye Young: Prepare the surgery room. I will rush back within 40 minutes!
Sang Shik arrives at Seoul and comes to the medical center. In the meantime, Hye Young also arrives and rushes to the surgery room. Hye Young asks Sang Shik to let her go to the surgery room. Sang Shik says that he will wait for Hye Young to finish the surgery.
